My friend GarbanzoBean drew my attention to this with a post on her blog. Men's Health Magazine presents a list of the top 15 things that scare men. It's a funny list, but I'm a little peeved by #3: Tofurky.
What we should fear and abhor is the slaughterhouse, the process by which animals go from the farm to our table, neatly packaged and ready to be cooked, sliced and eaten. In our society of prepared foods, we're so insulated from the cruelty and gore that is inherent in factory farming.

They'd be scared by it? I wonder if its because its an affront to their manhood or if they fear the taste. Proud to say my man isn't afraid, and his parents cook it for me at every holiday!
Great post, Vegan Doc!
Frightening indeed.
tofu based foods are not a part of our traditional diet. it is the fear of the unknown. That is why I dont' tell my family what they are eating until AFTER they try it!
Agree 110%.. it is odd to me how it seems to be accepted by society that we should "fear" vegetarian/vegan food... man, I fear the disease and death of animal foods!
I wholeheartedly agree.
Instead of fearing the tofurky, people should think about the fear that factory farmed animals are subjected. All that fear and stress can't be healthy for any animal which in turn can't make for healthy food.
I wish people would be more conscientious about the suffering and torture that goes into the making of meat.
Amen! We've enjoyed a few Tofurkeys in our household. It's probably not the food that is feared, but the challenge to the traditional dominant culture that endorses a human/animal relationship as some kind of heirarchy and meat eating as normal.
To me eating meat not only contributes to the suffering of millions, and the destruction of our environment, but it is also cannibalistic.
Right on.
And men should also fear cancer, heart disease, diabetes and unsightly obesity in lieu of Tofurky. Real men love Tofurky.
Men (and women) should fear the hormones and antibiotics in animal products, the fecal matter that winds up in burgers, the fecal soup chickens endure on the slaughter line....
Hi Vegan Doc,
I'm applying to be on the Nutrition Team for the Health Promotion Team at my university. I'd like to include vegan and vegetarian eating as viable healthy eating options in my presentation to the board, and I'm wondering if you have any tips for introducing the topic without getting the "oh, another crazy PETA person" look.
It's amazing how these cliches -like tofu is unmanly- live so long in society! The funny thing is, almost every processed, junk, or fast food in this country contains soy in one form or another. You might as well eat the healthy kind! sheesh.
