Chole


Chole (pronounced "cho-LAY") is a traditional north Indian dish with chick peas and spices. As I leared from Lisa's friend Vani, all good Indian food starts with mustard seeds. Perhaps this is an over-simplification on my part, but her advice works, and when I move to Boston in July, I plan on tracking her down for more lessons in Indian cooking.

Anyway, start with about a tablespoon of olive oil and some mustard seeds on medium heat. When the mustard seeds start popping, I turned the heat down to low and added one chopped cooking onion, and shortly thereafter a can of drained and rinsed chick peas and two chopped roma tomatoes. On top of that, I added some sea salt, ground pepper, and spices: turmeric, coriander, cumin, paprika, and garlic. I heated the mixture on my stove for about 15 minutes, then ate it with a couple slices of whole wheat pita bread.

Yum. We haven't made much Indian food since our 2 year started eating food, and you can't buy it out here.

I've never really made Indian food--I'm more of an Asian food girl--but I ought to try that with chickpeas and lentils.

That sounds really good. And I happen to have some wheat pita sitting at home. Maybe I'll make that for dinner tonight...?

And I know Vani will be VERY happy to talk Indian food with you. We keep saying she has to give me lessons if I'm ever in town long enough to take advantage of it.

Looks yummy, but you know Kevin won't eat it:) I had an oatmeal raisin cookie with my veggie wrap today at lunch. So much for giving up sugar for Lent - I only lasted for a week.

Mary Ruth, as I'm sure you know, Kevin hates Indian food about as much as I love it. I have no idea why. Don't stress too hard about one oatmeal cookie; on the bright side, it has oatmeal in it which is full of fiber!
